Characteristics Barbuntín
Barbuntín is an Albariño variety white wine that the Quinta de Couselo winery produces in the D.O. Rías Baixas.
Quinta de Couselo is located in Santa María de Oia, a monastery built in the 12th century facing the Atlantic Sea, between the towns of A Guardia and Baiona. Although the estate has been making limited production wines in the O Rosal sub-region for more than 150 years, it was only in 2013 that it was taken over by Grandes Pagos Gallegos de Viticultura Tradicional. An initiative carried out by a group of winemakers and vine growers who want to boost native varieties in those areas where they can best express themselves.
Barbuntín comes from 8 hectares of 30-year-old vineyards trained using the arbour system and planted in mostly granitic soil with slate and shale notes. They are surrounded by an Atlantic microclimate with mild temperatures, abundant rainfall and hours of direct sunshine. The grapes are picked by hand and transported straight away in 15 kg boxes.
The grapes are put in a cold room at 5ºC and then passed over the selection table. The whole grape is destemmed and macerated, then pressed for 2 hours in a pneumatic press with the musts separated. Barbuntín ferments at a controlled temperature and is aged on its fine lees for 3 months in stainless steel tanks.
Barbuntín is a white wine that was awarded the “Best Albariño in the World” at the International Wine Challenge 2018 and has won the Platinum Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards (97 points).

Barbuntín 2018 is an aromatic white wine that presents notes of rose petals, white fruit and aromatic herbs. On the palate it has a very good beginning, refreshing minerality and tenacity.

D.O. Rías Baixas
Rías Baixas wines would not be where they are today without the native Albariño grape variety. Although red wines are also produced in Rías Baixas, practically 100% of Rías Baixas wines are white. Among them, the vast majority of them are made with the Albariño grape. As well as young wines, fresh and aromatic, the region also makes wines aged in the barrels, complex wines with great personalities. Albariño wines can either be single varieties, or be part of a blend with other characteristic grapes of the region: Treixadura, Loureira Blanca and Godello.
