Ata Rangi Craighall Chardonnay is an organic barrel-aged white wine made by the Ata Rangi winery with the Chardonnay variety in the Wellington area (New Zealand).

Ata Rangi, which means “the sky at dawn,” was founded in 1980 in the city of Martinborough, in Wellington, New Zealand. It all began when the Paton family read a scientific report that showed how the region’s land and climate are similar to the prestigious Burgundy region, and based on that, they decided to invest in vineyards. After years of hard work and perseverance, it is now one of the country’s main Pinot Noir wineries and their delicious, concentrated wines can be found all over the world.

Ata Rangi Craighall Chardonnay comes from the oldest vines planted in Martinborough. A total of 0.8 hectares of old vines aged over 30 years old and planted in stony soil, growing under strong winds from Antarctica and low rainfall. That means production is limited to small but very concentrated berries. Ecological agriculture is used and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness.

When the Ata Rangi Craighall Chardonnay grapes reach the winery, the clusters are pressed whole. Then the must ferments in new and used French oak barrels. Finally, after partial malolactic fermentation, it ages in the same barrels with its lees for 12 months.

Ata Rangi Craighall Chardonnay is the fruit of the oldest Chardonnay plantation in Martinborough. These vines live in a harsh microclimate with Antarctic influences, which results in a white wine with impressive power and minerality.
