António Madeira A Palheira Tinto is a red wine coupage of the Tinta Amarela, Jaen and Baga varieties as well as other local varieties, produced by the António Madeira winery in the DOC Dão in Beiras, Portugal.
António Madeira A Palheira Tinto is made from a blend of grapes that come from old vines aged between 50 and 90 years old. The Jaen variety is the most prominent, making up around 40% of the coupage, depending of the vintage, and is accompanied by the Tinta Amarela, Baga and more than 20 other native varieties, some of which are yet to be identified.
When the grape bunches reach the winery, they are traditionally trodden to begin a spontaneous fermentation with their native yeasts, which takes place in open tanks. The resulting wine ages for 14 months in oak barrels.
António Madeira is a young French winegrower of Portuguese descent with family roots in Serra da Estrela, a sub-region of Dão. Since 2010, he has devoted himself to researching the best areas, what we could call the Grands Crus do Dão, to rescue old vineyards where the authenticity and variety of the local grapes predominate and the granite soils add character and personality to the wines.
