Algueira Serradelo is a red wine from Ribeira Sacra, produced by the Algueira winery, under the direction of Fernando González.

Algueira Serradelo is a varietal made from the Brancellao variety. A native grape variety widely used before the phylloxera plague, but today almost forgotten due to its low performance. The grapes used to make this wine comes from old vines planted on terraces by the River Sil, with almost vertical walls (a drop of almost 85%) which makes it impossible to use machines for harvesting. Protected by the river and the steep slopes, the vineyards enjoy a special microclimate, meaning it is warmer than the rest of Galicia. Winters are cold and rainy, yet summers are hot with temperatures of up to 45 ° C.
The floors are lined with shale, a laminated mineral similar to slate, which has a great ability to give a pleasant minerality to the wine. With these very special conditions of variety, soil, location and microclimate, Algueira Bodega tries to intervene as little as possible in the cellar to respect the natural expression of the land through the fruit.
The grapes are harvested manually, taking advantage of off-peak hours to ensure a cool temperature in the cellar, where a selection of the best grapes takes place. The grapes are trodden using feet, as is traditionally done.
A smooth maceration is performed at a temperature of 10 ° C, prior to fermentation with local yeasts. Algueira Serradelo is aged in French oak barrels of 225 litres for 14 months. Algueira Serradelo is one of the few varietals that is made from the Brancellao grape. A hidden gem known by very few.

Ribeira Sacra is one of those magical places that you just have to visit to truly experience it. The vertiginous terraces rise steep on the banks of the river Sil, making the terrain difficult to work on that it requires complete manual work and labor on the vineyards. The agriculture carried out here is aptly referred to as ‘heroic agriculture’, due to the hard work carried out cultivating the land. Both red and white wines are produced in the Ribeira Sacra. The red wines are mostly made with the Mencía variety, defined by their expressive and elegant character with a good acidity. The Ribeira Sacra white wines are principally made with the Godello and Albariño varieties. They are wines with a good volume in the mouth, aromatic and fruity. The Ribeira Sacra wines are often come in very limited productions, are of high quality and with notable personalities.
