Albet i Noya Col·lecció Syrah is a red wine produced using only grapes of the Syrah variety. It is from the Penedès DO, situated in the east of Catalonia.  

This wine is produced by the winery Albet i Noya, known for their ecological farming. There is no use of chemical products and the sulphur reduced by half compared to a traditional winery. All of this results in an ecological red wine.

The vines at Albet  i Noya grown on organic soils The vineyards are planted on soils low in organic matter containing clay, sand and limestone. The land is quite permeable but it has a good capcity for retaining humidity.

Concerning the production of Albet i Nova Col·lecció Syrah, the harvest takes place manually, with every grape being selected at a mesa de selección, or a ‘selection table’. Fermentation then takes palce for 8 days at 27 ºC. 

The maceration phase lasts 18 days with 2 pump overs daily. The wine is not clarified nor stabilized by cold however it lightly filtered before being botelled. Finally, the wine is aged in first or second year french and american oak of 225 litres for a year.

It is recommended that before serving that you let the wine air out a bit and serve at 18ºC. The production of Albet i Noya Col·lecció Syrah is limited.

Albet i Noya was, among other things, the first national winery to make organic wines. In 1978, Josep Maria Albet i Noya represented the Unió de Pagesos in the Regulatory Council of D.O. Penedès, when a Danish company addressed the D.O. looking for a producer of organic wine. At the time, there were no organic producers in the entire state, and the Council discussed the issue with Josep Maria, a strict vegetarian. From then and until this day, his wines are the paradigm of the strictest organic production and, undoubtedly, one of the most exciting innovations of Penedès. It has positioned itself on the market, with boutique wines made in a modern way, with a characteristic and personal Mediterranean style.

Today, the D.O Penedès is experimenting with viticulture and winemaking like no other region in Spain, home to a vast range of different grape varieties. The region is home to traditional white and red varieties, foreign ones, noble ones, permitted grapes, experimental grapes, and those that demostrate intrinsic qualities. As well as the grapes, the production techniques used are also worth noting, the location of the vineyards, the yields per hectare, the wines produced using traditional, original or even exclusive blends, the different ageing times, as well as the complexity of the different barrels used! But the reality is, given the vast diversity, it can be difficult to pinpoint what really defines a wine from Penedès, since there are so many types of wines and wineries in the region. However, the common denominator of all the wines from Penedès continues to be balance and quality.
