Albamar Capitan Xurelo is a barrel-aged red wine made by Albamar with the Mencía, Espadeiro and Caíño Tinto varieties in the D.O. Rías Baixas (Galicia).
Albamar was set up by Xurxo Alba, a winegrower who took over the family business and began making his own wines, having studied and worked as a consultant. It is a small winery in the town of Cambados, in the Salnés valley (Pontevedra) where they make small production wines with a true Atlantic character from three hectares of vineyards.
Albamar Capitan Xurelo is made with a coupage of varieties from the Salnés sub-region. These are plots with sandy soil near the mouth of the Umia river. The team use environmentally friendly agriculture with only moderate and careful use of treatments against mildew and powdery mildew.
The Albamar Capitan Xurelo grapes and their stems are trodden with feet and the resulting must is fermented spontaneously in plastic buckets with native yeasts. The wine then ages in oak barrels for about 12 months, and is finally bottled without filtering or clarifying.
Made with local varieties, Albamar Capitan Xurelo is a small production that started life as a discard from the O Esteiro wine made by the same winery. An Atlantic red with a salty background.
