About Ponce Red wine

Ponce is a barrel-aged red wine made by Bodegas Ponce in the D.O. Manchuela (Castilla La Mancha) with the Bobal and Moravia Agria varieties.
 
Having studied under the great teacher Telmo Rodríguez, Juan Antonio Ponce returned to his native Machuela (Albacete) to set up his own personal project. Bodegas Ponce is committed to recovering native varieties like Bobal, Albilla white and Moravia Agria red and their wines are known for being clean, pure, simple, direct and not at all like typical quality wines. 
 
 
Cultivated separately on 40 plots under 2.5 hectares in size, the Ponce grapes benefit from the plateau and good aeration. And because the Bobal variety is naturally hard, it is cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture to soften it, by not forcing excessively low yields or harvesting early. The Moravia Agria grape is planted in calcareous soil.
 
 
In the winery, production of the Ponce wine begins with each variety fermenting separately with native yeasts in wooden vats and with a short maceration. The wine ages for 17 months in large, 600-litre French oak barrels. When it is ready, it is bottled without filtering or clarifying.
 
 
Being one of the winery’s latest new products, Ponce was made as a tribute to the first 15 years of the project. This is a personal work that carried the winemaker’s personality and has earned him the recognition of great masters like Parker.

2023

Ponce 2023 is a pale-coloured red wine, owing to its high percentage of Moravia Agria. On the nose, it offers subtle aromas that gradually unfold, revealing notes of red fruits such as cherries and strawberries, alongside floral hints, herbs, and a slight smokiness, all underpinned by a mineral backdrop. On the palate, it displays a silky texture that marries freshness with gravity, presenting a fluid and pleasing profile.

Ponce 2022 unfurls a captivating vibrancy and freshness with each sip. The bouquet reveals scents of berries and herbs, interwoven with a delicate floral nuance. On the palate, it glides with crispness, retaining a balanced acidity that beckons one to continue savoring and promises a favorable aging potential in the bottle. Ponce 2021 is a concentrated red wine with complex aromas of violet flowers, herbaceous notes and hints of smoke and minerals. The palate is lively, powerful and precise. A round wine with rustic yet elegant tannins, well-integrated acidity and a long, slightly saline finish.
