About Julien Meyer Zellberg
At times, the advice of our elders may seem like wisdom from another era, but it is only when we experience it firsthand that we truly comprehend their meaning. This was precisely what happened to Patrick Meyer, a winemaker who inherited the vineyards from his father, the oenologist Julien Meyer, after his passing.
Initially, without adhering to the ecological steps his father had initiated, Patrick chose to adopt the conventional practices he had learned at wine school, using pesticides and herbicides, convinced that this was the right path. However, he soon realised something was amiss: the health of the soil and vines began to deteriorate, the wines lost their essence, and the quality declined. It was then, with humility and reflection, that he decided to return to his father's methods, and his wines were revitalised.
A clear example of this revival is Julien Meyer Zellberg, a gem from Alsace that, with patience and dedication, captures the best of the region. Its biodynamic vineyards, over 30 years old and planted on marl and silt soils, allow the riesling grapes to thrive in optimal conditions. After a meticulous manual harvest, the grapes are transported to the winery, where they are hand-selected. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel and concrete tanks at controlled temperatures, and the wine matures for several months on fine lees.
The result is Julien Meyer Zellberg, an elegant wine, with an unmistakable purity, reflecting craftsmanship and reminding us that, ultimately, true wisdom lies in following the path that honours the land.
