About Iago's Wine Chinuri

The concept of intangible cultural heritage, or "living heritage," pertains to the practices, expressions, knowledge, or skills passed down through communities from generation to generation. The practice of winemaking in kvevris or Qvevris, carried out in the rural communities of Georgia, has been inscribed on the UNESCO list since 2013, and figures such as Iago Bitarishvili have been instrumental in its revitalization. Indeed, while in 2009 only he and four other producers utilized Qvevri, today there are over 80 producers who have reembraced this ancient technique. Furthermore, Iago's Wine was also the first winery in Georgia to receive organic certification for both vineyard and wine production (since 2014 without certification). The wines he crafts, just as his grandfather did, beautifully showcase subtlety and elegance.

Situated in the Kartli region, in the central-eastern part of Georgia, he produces wines such as Iago's Wine Chinuri, a monovarietal "skin contact" wine from the local chinuri grape, cultivated from old vines and hand-harvested. In the winery, the grapes are crushed without destemming, and the resulting must along with the pomace, stems, and seeds ferments with indigenous yeasts in a qvevri for 2 or 3 weeks. It is then sealed with clay and buried in the earth to mature on fine lees for 5 or 6 months.

The result is Iago's Wine Chinuri, one of the most renowned orange wines from Iago Bitarishvili, encapsulating all the magic of one of Georgia's great living heritages. A pure, vibrant energy of ancestral tradition.

Iago's Wine Chinuri 2021 is a vibrant orange wine boasting an aromatic profile of stone fruit, floral nuances, and hints of mint and spice. On the palate, it reveals a rich, multifaceted character with a subtle earthiness. This wine possesses a textured mouthfeel, pronounced acidity, and a robust yet well-incorporated tannic structure. The finish is invigorating, reminiscent of a sea breeze.
