About Cortes de Cima Palhete
Great things emerge from collaborations. In the realm of wine, magic often happens when different visions converge, when knowledge and passion intertwine to create something unique. Such is the case with the collaboration between Anna Jørgensen of Cortes de Cima and Daniel Niepoort of Niepoort, two luminaries in the wine world leading iconic wineries in Alentejo and Douro. Together, they conceive an impressive wine that encapsulates the best of both worlds, blending traditions with new ideas. The result of this collaboration is a wine that honours the legacy of Portuguese viticulture while inviting a rediscovery of its deepest roots: Cortes de Cima Palhete.
Palhete is the traditional Portuguese name for a wine crafted from both white and red grapes, a style dating back to ancient times when vineyards were often field blends. This nearly forgotten practice is revived in Cortes de Cima Palhete, bringing to the present a method of vinification that reflects a profound connection with the land and the most traditional winemaking customs.
Cortes de Cima Palhete originates in the clay-limestone soils at the foot of the Serra do Mendro, where the grapes are vinified manually to preserve their purity. A whole-cluster infusion of syrah with the liquid fraction of viognier is carried out, fermenting for a week in a 2000-litre tank. Following a vertical pressing, the wine ages on its lees in stainless steel, without the addition of sulphites and naturally protected. Finally, it is bottled without filtration, maintaining its authenticity and freshness.
Cortes de Cima Palhete is not merely a blend of grapes; it is the outcome of a collaboration where tradition meets innovation. A celebration of the past with an eye to the future.
