About Shannon Oscar Browne Chardonnay

Some ideas seem too simple to be significant... until they transform the understanding of a vineyard. And something akin to this happened to James Downes, when a seasoned vintner advised him never to plant vines in rows longer than 100 metres. The reasoning was straightforward. With shorter rows, even during a casual stroll through the estate, you can take in the heart of each vineyard at a glance. You observe its condition, identify issues, and comprehend the whole without getting lost in the minutiae. For James, this advice altered his perception of the land and, naturally, he implemented it.

The vineyards — a little over 15 hectares — do not present as a uniform block, but rather as a mixed landscape, almost domestic, with apple trees, pear trees, and vines coexisting in the same space. It is an agricultural ecosystem with a life of its own. And James traverses it as one would traverse something not merely managed but intimately known, each vine, each curve of the terrain, each subtle change in the soil.

In that very spirit is born Shannon Oscar Browne Chardonnay, a wine named after Oscar Browne, grandfather of James Downes, as a tribute to his role in the history of the estate located in the Elgin Valley, in South Africa. It is a chardonnay sourced from a single plot of scarcely 0.8 hectares. Small, almost minimal, yet sufficient to craft a wine with its own identity. The cultivation is traditional, and the harvest is conducted in two passes, optimising the timing of picking to the utmost.

In the winery, everything adheres to the same level of almost silent precision: grapes chilled to 3°C, hand selection cluster by cluster, and whole bunch pressing. Fermentation begins in barrel, where malolactic fermentation also occurs, without bâtonnage, aiming to preserve tension, purity, and definition. Subsequently, the ageing extends for about 11 months in 228-litre barrels from various Burgundian cooperages, with fine-grained wood and medium toast. 

Precise, fresh, and with a texture that envelops without weighing down, Shannon Oscar Browne Chardonnay is a chardonnay that speaks of terroir, climate, and well-measured decisions. It demonstrates that when everything is done with intention, even the smallest — 0.8 hectares — can give rise to something truly remarkable.
