About Schoenheitz Riesling Linsenberg
Today, the potato reigns supreme on European tables, yet before the arrival of this tuber, lentils were the true stars, both in the kitchen and in the fields. More than just a staple food, lentils possessed an agricultural superpower: when cultivated after uprooting a vineyard, they enriched the soil due to their nitrogen-fixing ability. An ingenious ancient method to prepare the land and ensure the health of the next harvest.
This legacy endures in Wihr-au-Val, a charming village in the heart of Alsace, France. There, at the Schoenheitz winery, the terroir—that almost magical word for wine enthusiasts—speaks for itself.
The iconic Schoenheitz Riesling Linsenberg takes its name from a plot known as "Mountain of the Lentils," a direct homage to that agricultural history inscribed in the soil. Just a few kilometres from Munster, in the Valley of Saint Gregory, this vineyard rises to an altitude of 450 metres, with slopes exceeding 50%. A landscape so steep that it allows only for manual cultivation, reserved for those who know that passion is the best ally of effort.
The soil here is a true geological treasure: decomposed granite with two types of mica, covered in stones and with a fractured bedrock that invites roots to delve deep in search of water and minerals. Thus, the vines, modest in vigour but intense in character, respond with a limited yet sublimely quality production.
At the winery, the crafting of Schoenheitz Riesling Linsenberg involves a slow eight-hour pressing, a leisurely fermentation extending until March, and ageing on fine lees throughout the summer, preserving its freshness and complexity intact. The result is a wine where purity, minerality, and elegance blend in perfect harmony. A true monarch at the table, paying tribute to the land that has witnessed its birth.
