About Rara Avis Albarín

Rara Avis Albarín is a barrel-aged white wine made by Raúl Pérez with the Albarín variety in Castilla y León.

Born in El Bierzo, Raúl Pérez, who is one of today’s most acclaimed Spanish winemakers, knows this wine region better than anyone. However, he is not fixed to one particular region. He works wherever he finds exceptional terroirs that will produce wines with a unique personality.

Rare Avis Albarín comes from old vines aged between 70 and 90 years old and planted in clay-calcareous soils. They are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture to maintain the natural balance of the terroir, and when the grape reaches optimum ripeness, it is harvested manually.

In the winery, the Rara Avis Albarín grapes are destemmed and gently pressed and the resulting must is vinified in oak vats. It ferments spontaneously with native yeasts and without controlling the temperature. Finally the wine ages for 18 months in 5-year-old French oak foudres.

Raúl Pérez has given this single-variety Albarín a name that means “something exceptional”. The Rara Avis Albarín wine is difficult to find but will easily impress. An outstanding white.

2013 Rara Avis Albarín 2013 is a white wine with aromas of ripe white fruit, notes of scrubland and mineral touches. On the palate it is flavoursome, crisp and very refreshing. It reveals brilliant acidity and a great fruity flavour.
