About La Nieta
We are already aware of the devotion grandparents have for their grandchildren. The truth is that the arrival of these little ones into the family brings a breath of fresh air, especially for the elderly, giving them the perfect excuse to bring out the best in themselves. Grandparents are not tasked with educating but simply making their grandchildren happy. Similarly, from a heartfelt perspective, Viñedos de Páganos, a winery founded in 1998 by the fifth generation of the winegrowing Eguren family, produces Viñedos de Páganos La Nieta, a small gem from a parcel of just 1.75 hectares located in the D.O.Ca Rioja and named after the same, it is the darling of the house.
Specifically, Viñedos de Páganos La Nieta is situated in Páganos-Laguardia (Álava) at an altitude of 525 metres above sea level. These are tempranillo vines planted in 1975 on loamy-clay and highly mineral soils, enjoying an Atlantic climate with continental influence. Integrated viticulture is practiced, respectful of the environment, in harmony with nature's biorhythms. Once harvested and selected, the grapes are immediately transported to the winery.
Carved beneath the vineyard, Viñedos de Páganos is an impressive underground winery. A state-of-the-art facility where the initial fermentation of Viñedos de Páganos La Nieta takes place in small 10-hectolitre oak vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels. There it remains for 18 months, resulting in a smooth, expressive, and very elegant wine.
Thus, heading several wineries in different Denominations of Origin, the Eguren family has watched their family grow with pride. From Sierra Cantabria, Viñedos Sierra Cantabria, Señorío de San Vicente, and Viñedos de Páganos in La Rioja, to Teso La Monja in Toro, and Domino de Eguren de Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla, these are authentic wines brimming with personality. Five generations dedicated to wine, with Viñedos de Páganos La Nieta, introduced to society in its 2004 vintage, promise to remain at the forefront for a long time to come.

| 2017 | The autumn and winter of the new harvest began with lower rainfall and slightly higher temperatures. With the unusually high temperatures that occurred in the month of March, budding was considerably early. As a result of the frost endured on April 28, the earliest buds suffered a considerable loss of production. After the incident, the growth cycle proceeded normally, noted for the two different blooms that occurred due to the frost. The summer continued with high temperatures and little rainfall. It wasn’t until September that the phenolics and phenolic states came into balance. The result of waiting a little longer for the harvest helped achieve a balanced grape without green notes. | |
| 2010 | Fresh attack and a round, smooth, silky, velvety palate. Very elegant. Masterfully structured, with ripe, tame tannins and an excellent acidity. Very long and persistent finish. Fruity, spicy, toasted, lactic, balsamic and mineral notes felt at retro-olfaction. Delicate, complex, infinite. Lively, intense and deep cherry red colour with violet reflections. Abundant even, slow-falling tears show on the glass. La Nieta 2010 is more fragrant than previous vintages. It is both intense and delicate, full of nuances. Juicy and fleshy aromas of ripe black fruit are released, which give way to roasted aromas, sweet spices and floral notes. Profound balsamic, menthol and mineral notes in the background. |
|

Delicate, complex, infinite. Picota cherry colour with violet reflections. Abundant, slow and even falling tears show on the glass. La Nieta has an intense yet delicate nose, full of nuances. Juicy, fleshy, ripe black fruit stands out and gradually gives way to aromas of fine woods, sweet spices, floral notes and a balsamic, mineral background. |
|
| 2008 | From the first plunge this wine is round, and has a broad, bulky and full-bodied attack and a silky, creamy, intense mid palate. Its marked notes of black fruit are well integrated with the aromas of wood. It shows a very good acidity that provides an appreciated freshness. Tannins have a moderated presence. Long and lingering finish with a slightly bitter but pleasant mineral aftertaste.
A great wine that will conquer us. A pleasure, a jewel. Intense red with violet edges. Very bright. Dense, slow-falling tears. Its tasty notes of fruit appear on an appealing creamy background. When it opens up, balanced notes of wood, some toasted touches and sweet spices emerge complementing the fruit arômas without hiding them. Some delicate floral notes are also noticed on a good mineral background. Intense and pleasant nose. |
|
| 2007 | Very good start, spacious, velvety and powerful. Present tannins but well integrated. Long and persistent aftertaste, with mineral presence. A very elegant wine. Dark red, very bright, with purple hues. Continous tear that dyes the cup. Intensely aromatic complexity. We will find aromas of black fruit, toasted, milk, spices ( vanilla, cinnamon). All this with a sharp balsamic and mineral substance. As it opens, we will find more intensity. |
