About Iria Otero Valmica de Valdeorras

Despite having no family background in winemaking, Iria Otero was certain that her calling was in wine. She was so convinced that, utterly enamoured with this world, she set aside her career as a pharmacist and relocated from London to La Rioja, where she could delve deeper into her newfound passion. Eventually, in 2015, after several years working in wineries such as Vintae and Dominio do Bibei, Iria was able to purchase grapes and began crafting her own wines in a friend's winery. Nearly a decade later, Iria is now fully independent and during this journey, she has ventured into different territories, such as the D.O. Valdeorras, where she produces Iria Otero Valmica de Valdeorras.
 
Iria Otero Valmica de Valdeorras is a single-varietal godello, exceptionally elegant, aged on lees, and embodies the unique perspective the winemaker holds on this region in Northern Spain. Specifically, Iria Otero Valmica de Valdeorras is cultivated in Viña Rubia, an area very close to Bierzo, where slate and granite soils prevail, poor and shallow, with a high iron content. These soils, situated between 300 and 700 metres above sea level, tend to retain heat very well. Thus, the heat from the high summer temperatures, which reach nearly 33°C, is stored in the upper layers, enhancing the alcohol content and complexity of the grapes. These details, along with the meticulous winemaking process (always based on natural and spontaneous fermentations) and its ageing (less than six months in stainless steel tanks) ensure that Iria Otero Valmica de Valdeorras becomes an outstanding wine.
