About Granbazán Contrapunto

Galicia is a land of excellent wines; however, they might not be as well-known and recognised as they should be. According to a study published in 2019 by the Foro Económico de Galicia (FEG), smallholdings are the main reason why the wine sector in this north-western Spanish region struggles to fully take off. Specifically, nearly two-thirds of Galician plots are less than 0.5 hectares, which significantly hinders large-scale production. Some producers and winemakers have already tackled this historical issue in the area, such as Manuel Otero, who in 1965 set out to reverse the situation. He purchased Tremoedo, a 14-hectare estate located 3 km from Cambados in the heart of the Salnés Valley, planted with Albariño (the indigenous variety of the area). On this innovative and ambitious idea, the Granbazán wineries were founded, a current benchmark in the D.O. Rías Baixas. Among all their wines is Granbazán Contrapunto, the youngest of the five wines currently marketed by this winery.

The fieldwork and vine care are the foundation of Granbazán, where they have strived to study the vegetative cycles of Albariño. This variety grows on pergolas, at a height of 1.80 metres, a typical feature of this area. The main reason for this training system is that it allows both the leaves and clusters to be well-aerated, preventing diseases and moulds that can result from the humidity and high rainfall characteristic of the region. At ground level, this abundance of water is also managed with slopes, allowing water to drain through the granitic soil. The vineyard, facing east and at an altitude of 100 metres above sea level, is divided into micro-plots where a great effort is invested in unlocking their potential.

In the winery, the vinification processes are minimally invasive, always emphasising the terroir. The facilities are modern, equipped with state-of-the-art stainless-steel tanks, presses, and maceration vats. This latter aspect, along with barrel ageing in French oak, is one of Granbazán's strengths, being pioneers in the area for both operations. In the case of Granbazán Contrapunto, the harvest is carried out manually, selecting only the best clusters, which are then destemmed and cold macerated. Granbazán Contrapunto will ferment in stainless-steel tanks and rest for three months. This period will be sufficient to settle the small substances and particles. After this, Granbazán Contrapunto will be bottled.

Over 20 years ago, Granbazán wineries were at the forefront of one of the most significant agro-industrial revolutions in Galicia. Today, they remain a benchmark in innovation and new production methods both in the vineyard and the winery.

Granbazán Contrapunto 2024 is a refreshing and youthful wine. It exhibits a pale yellow hue, almost translucent. Upon nosing, one detects notes of juicy pear, stone fruits such as peach, a citrus hint of mandarin, and a subtle ginger spice. These aromas are complemented by an elegant backdrop of orange blossom, fresh grass, and a whisper of mint. On the palate, it presents with vigour, combining a radiant acidity and balanced salinity that endow this wine with a light yet vibrant character. Granbazán Contrapunto 2021 is an aromatic white wine, exhibiting a pale yellow hue, pristine and luminous. The bouquet is pronounced, replete with tropical nuances, citrus zest, floral essences, and fresh herbs. On the palate, it is youthful, flavorsome, and vibrant, exuding electricity. Harmoniously balanced. The finish is extensive and tenacious. On the palate, it is tasty and zesty, its subtle sweetness harmonizing with the lively acidity.
