Château Fonréaud 2022 is a juicy and rich red wine. About Château Fonréaud

Legend has it that Henry II Plantagenêt, King of England and husband of Eleanor of Aquitaine, stopped with his entourage to drink from a spring located in the Listrac-Médoc AOC, just between Moulis and Saint-Julien, south of Bordeaux. This story, passed down from generation to generation, is what gave Château Fonréaud its name.

Whether or not they had a drink (true or not), what can be said today is that this property – founded in the 18th century – is one of the key estates in this region, where Château Fonréaud, one of the best known and most tasted reds in the region, is produced. Considered as the roof of the Médoc, the Listrac-Médoc AOC is one of the most privileged terroirs in all of Bordeaux, as its altitude (around 43 metres above sea level) promotes the presence of a microclimate and unique conditions for grape ripening. From the gravelly soils and its clay-limestone base (which allows for proper surface drainage and good water storage in the deep layers) to its location (between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary), they have a determining influence on the cultivation of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot.

Traditionally, the custom in this region was to bury the cellars halfway in order to achieve a constant temperature. Château Fonréaud continues to make use of this ancestral knowledge to achieve a totally temperate environment for the wines, resulting in a fermentation that meets quality standards. All this is achieved in part thanks to the latest technology equipment, with which it is possible to control and regulate humidity and temperature. After the harvest, which is carried out by hand, Château Fonréaud is vatted – each variety separately – in small concrete vats, where they ensure that each plot and each terroir are expressed and enhanced. Finally, once Château Fonréaud finishes fermentation, Château Fonréaud is racked into French oak barrels, where it spends an average of one year. During this time, each of the lots is tasted regularly until the final coupage or blend is made. Don't miss the opportunity to taste one of Bordeaux's essential red wines!
