About Château de Ferrand
In Saint-Hippolyte, at an altitude of about 100 metres, Château Ferrand has one of the highest vineyards in the A.O.C. Saint-Émilion. This is the birthplace of Château de Ferrand, one of the best wines in Bordeaux.
Château de Ferrand is a red coupage of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc produced by this winery in the south of Bordeaux, specifically in Saint-Émilion, very close to the Dordogne valley. The winery owns 32 hectares in this area, planted on the Saint-Émilion plateau with mostly clay-limestone soils, the composition of which varies depending on the plot. Depending on where it is located, some places will have more clay, while others will be more calcareous. These unique features, together with the fact that the vines are located at the highest point of the A.O.C. Saint-Émilion, result in very peculiar grapes, unique in the area, which ripen later than the rest of the area’s vineyards. This translates into spectacular aromas and tasty levels of acidity.
The character and nature of the soil will also influence the work in the vineyard, since the main aim at Château de Ferrand is to capture the identity of the terroir. Because of this, each plot will be cultivated according to its potential, following a series of tasks: pruning, bud break and debudding. It’s important to remember that no herbicides have been used at Château Ferrand for the last 15 years, thus achieving a totally organic and chemical-free harvest. Likewise, grape ripeness is checked every day by sensory analysis, and assessments are then confirmed by technical and phenolic analysis.
When the time comes, the Château de Ferrand grapes are harvested. This work is divided into three stages: it begins with a selection in the vineyard, continues with the manual selection and ends with a visual selection before the grapes are transferred into tanks by gravity. This is also one of the hallmarks of Château de Ferrand, where the work in the winery is carried out with the minimum possible intervention. Finally, Château de Ferrand will be aged between 14 and 18 months in fine-grain French oak barrels, where the fruit will always play a leading role.
Château de Ferrand will be bottled on the estate. We cannot be 100% sure that Château de Ferrand is the best wine of the A.O.C. Saint Èmilion. What we can say for sure is that Château de Ferrand is, at the very least, one of the most interesting projects in the area.
