About Villa Matilde Cecubo

Villa Matilde Cecubo is a barrel-aged red wine made with the Primitivo and Piedirosso varieties in Campania (Italy) by Villa Matilde.

The Villa Matilde winery was set up at the foot of the Roccamonfina volcano (Campania) in 1960 with the aim of reviving the ancient varieties used to make “divine Falerno”, a high-quality wine that was served to the rulers of ancient Rome . Villa Matilde is working towards being a zero-emission winery and in making their wide range of wines, they focus on using traditional native varieties and incorporating sustainability in all phases of production.

The Villa Matilde Cecubo wine comes from vines aged between 20 and 45 years old, lying 150 metres above sea level. These strains are planted in volcanic soil and have a limited yield of 5,000 litres per hectare. Work in the vineyard is respectful to the environment, using low consumption machinery and reusing water to irrigate. The harvest is also manual and the clusters are selected by hand to protect the berries.

Once the grape reaches the winery, it is destemmed and pressed gently to make the Villa Matilde Cecubo must. It then ferments together with the skins at a constant temperature of around 26ºC. Finally, it ages in new and used Allier oak barrels for 12 months.

Villa Matilde Cecubo is inspired by the wines of ancient Rome. It is full of the depth and elegance that emanate from the grapes that are native to the extinct Roccamonfina volcano.
2013 Villa Matilde Cecubo 2013 is a mature red wine with deep aromas of plums, berries, vanilla and cocoa, notes of liquorice and tobacco and hints of dried figs. On the palate it is full, structured and very elegant.
