In the Valtellina region (in northern Italy), nestled between the road from Santa Anna to Traisso, lies the vineyard of Nuova Regina. It is here that ARPEPE Sassella Riserva Nuova Regina is born.
ARPEPE Sassella Riserva Nuova Regina can be considered almost a miracle, a true feat of nature emerging from a terrain where rock prevails over soil. Thus, at an altitude of 450 metres, this Lombardy winery retains most of its old vineyards which, depending on the vintage, are capable of producing true gems. Here, the nebbiolo di alpi, the local name for nebbiolo, takes on marvellous characteristics. In this area, very near the Alps, this variety is blessed by the abundance of sunlight and its southern orientation, allowing it to ripen properly. All these factors, combined with the poor stony soils, cause the vines to focus on developing few but high-quality bunches. Quality over quantity.
Generally, the DOC Valtellina Superiore is a somewhat hostile area that demands great manual effort, requiring the expertise of strictly human labour. Only experienced vintners and workers familiar with the region can navigate and move through the steep and rugged slopes, so typical and characteristic of this area. Only in this way can the harvest of ARPEPE Sassella Riserva Nuova Regina be accomplished.
ARPEPE Sassella Riserva Nuova Regina is distinguished by its long macerations and ageing processes. Well, this is true for all ARPEPE wines, as this is one of the distinctive traits of this winery. Generally, macerations last no less than three months (89 days in the case of ARPEPE Sassella Riserva Nuova Regina), while the time the wines spend in barrels ranges from two to three years.
As stated on their website, the principal tool at ARPEPE is their patience. A virtue not easily cultivated. Yet, it is worth waiting as long as necessary to savour a fine glass of ARPEPE Sassella Riserva Nuova Regina.
