About Niepoort Turris Tinto

When discussing Portuguese wines, many people automatically think of the renowned Port. However, Portugal also excels in its wide range of still wines (non-fortified) that reflect the diversity of its terroir and the unique characteristics of its indigenous grape varieties. A name that stands out in this transformation is Dirk Niepoort, the fifth generation of a winemaking family of Dutch origin who has revolutionised traditional ideals, demonstrating that Portugal is much more than just Port.

From the various wine regions where he works, in the Douro he produces outstanding still reds and whites, internationally recognised for their structure and complexity. From here emerges Niepoort Turris Tinto, a first-class cuvée made from the indigenous varieties tinta roriz (tempranillo), Tinto Cão, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, and Trincadeira. Old vines that sink their roots deeply into slate soils and are cultivated with respect. The harvest is done by hand when perfectly ripe and immediately transferred to the lagar. For vinification, the best grapes are first selected and carefully crushed. Fermentation takes place in large oak barrels at controlled temperatures, and afterwards, the wine ages for 20 months in oak barrels. Pleasantly dry, it is bottled with only 1 gram of residual sugar.

Niepoort Turris Tinto exemplifies the excellence of Portuguese still wines. A red wine that stands out for its great balance, combining richness of flavours and elegance, confirming that Portugal thrives on more than just Port.

Niepoort Turris Tinto 2024 unveils an alluring aromatic spectrum from the moment the bottle is uncorked. On the nose, one perceives intense aromas of ripe red fruits such as cherries and blackberries, accompanied by a subtle floral hint of violets. On the palate, this wine reveals its concentrated character, with a smooth and velvety texture, combined with a vibrant acidity that perfectly balances its well-structured tannins. It is distinguished by its elegance and harmony, extending its flavour into a persistent and pleasurable finish. It is recommended not only for its remarkable complexity and depth but also for its ability to surprise those seeking to discover unique and delicate nuances in a wine with character.

Niepoort Turris Tinto 2023 exhibits a radiant purple hue in the glass. On the nose, it is distinguished by aromas of strawberry and raspberry, complemented by subtle mineral notes. On the palate, it impresses with its freshness and liveliness, thanks to a well-defined fruity acidity. The finish is persistent, once again showcasing the mineral notes, a reflection of the slate soils where its grapes are cultivated. An elegant and concentrated wine that leaves a lasting impression.
