About Mengoba Mencía

Menogaba Mencía is a red wine from the D.O Bierzo produced by the Mengoba winery. This wine is a blend of two different grape varieties: Mencía and Alicante Bouschet. 

The Mencía grapes come from vineyards that are over 80 years old, located in the municipality of Espanillo, 700 metres above sea level. The Alicante Bouschet grapes, also known as Garnacha Tintorera, come 50 year old vineyards in the towns of Horta and Villafranca del Bierzo, 550 metres above sea level.

The vineyards are home to slate, clay and sandy soils, which are cultivated using artisan methods. The climate is continental, although with Atlantic influences, is ideal for the cultivation of these varieties of grapes. The harvest is carried out manually, ensuring that the grapes to not break and that they remain in the best possible condition on arrival to the winery.  

At the winery, the grapes for Mengoba Mencía are destemmed and pressed before being placed into large wooden fudres. Here, the juice of the wine ferments and rests until racking, six months later. The wine is then bottled after a light clarification and without filtration.

Mengoba is a project led by renowned winemake Gregory Pérez. Working sustainably and with the upmost respect for the vineyards, the winery has become one of the most emblematic in El Bierzo.

2016 Mengoba Mencía 2016 is a deep wine, with structure and freshness. This vintage shows all the aromatic potential, ripe red fruit with light toasted and spicy notes. In the mouth, it is silky and quite easy to drink.
