About Libalis Semidulce

The preference for red wines in La Rioja is mainly due to the Tempranillo grape variety. Considered the region’s emblematic grape, it has been the key to its worldwide recognition. However, white varieties also have a long history in La Rioja. In the past, winegrowers and farmers used to plant red and white varieties in the same plots at the same time. A traditional practice that made it possible to take advantage of the specific soil and climate conditions to grow different types of grapes. But while white wines are also produced in La Rioja, they have not been as common or well-recognised as their red counterparts. Someone who wanted to give Rioja white wine the importance it deserves was businessman José Manuel Arambarri, who in 1999 set about recovering the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains variety, a native variety to La Rioja considered to be the most aromatic in the world. His Maetierra project, the only winery in the Autonomous Community of La Rioja specialising in white wines and a pioneer in the IGP Valles de Sadacia, was a true revolution. A great adventure that his sons Richi and Jose Manuel now carry with the same rebellious and enterprising spirit.

This project is located in Calahorra, in eastern La Rioja, and they make a collection of white wines under the Libalis brand that are a real delight. Libalis Semidulce is a blend of the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, Viura and Malvasía white varieties. These vines were planted in 1999 in saline soils and with low yields to showcase the maximum expression of the variety. They are grown using environmentally friendly agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness. In the winery, the grapes undergo a special cold maceration for 6 hours and then fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks at 16ºC, interrupted by cooling to 0ºC to leave unfermented sugars.

This is how they make Libalis Semidulce, a semi-sweet wine made in a natural way. A true revolution in Rioja and a dream come true for an entrepreneur who knew better than anyone the virtues of a native variety that would be perfect for the production of sweet and aromatic white wines.

 

2022

Libalis Semidulce 2022 is a fruity white wine with tropical fruit aromas accompanied by floral notes. On the palate it is fresh, fragrant and silky. A very balanced wine, with well-integrated acidity and a very attractive sweet finish.
