About Curii

Curii is a barrel-aged red wine made by Curii Uvas y Vinos in Alicante (Spain) with the native Giro variety (Garnacha).

Curii Uvas y Vinos is the name of the project set up in 2010 by Violeta Gutiérrez de la Vega (daughter of the Gutiérrez de La Vega winery owner) and Alberto Redrado (Sommelier at the L’Escaleta Restaurant and winner of the National Gastronomy Award for Best Sommelier 2009). Located about 8 km from the Mediterranean Sea in an area where the Moscatel business dominated over local winemaking, this small family winery in Xaló (Alicante) was set up with the aim of recovering forgotten plots, rescuing native varieties like the Giró (local Garnacha clone) and making wines with minimal intervention. As a result they have a very small production of true Mediterranean wines, which are aromatic, rich and easy to drink.

Curii is a single-variety wine made with a recovered local variety: the Giró. It is a very striking vine but with poor yield and irregular ripening. The grapes comes from different small plots in the Sierra de Bernia, in the towns of Benisa and Xaló, planted on clay soils with limestone. They are grown using environmentally-friendly agriculture and the harvest is completely manual.

Once the Curii grapes reach the winery, they are destemmed and trampled in open tanks. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts and aging takes place in neutral French oak barrels for one year, with a second year in old American oak barrels. It is bottled without clarifying or filtering.

Curii is a red wine that starts life on the Mediterranean terraces of the Marina Alta (Alicante). An area between the sea and the mountain where the local Giró variety is at its most seductive. Fruit, freshness and intensity.

2015 Curii 2015 is a juicy red wine with a wide range of aromas of red and black fruits, spicy notes and aromatic herbs. On the palate it reveals fruity intensity, freshness and an earthy background. It is a medium-bodied wine, with fine and well structured tannins. It has a long and great aging potential in the bottle.
