About Altún Everest

Few achieve the summit of Everest, and those who do not only reach the highest point but also demonstrate unwavering dedication, passion, and effort. Altún Everest is, akin to the mountaineers who challenge the mountain, a wine born from that same ambition and perseverance.

The story of this wine began in 2001, when José Antonio Martínez, with the dream of creating a wine as grand as Everest, planted a unique tempranillo vineyard on an exceptional plot in the Rioja Alavesa. The first vine was planted in 1965, but it was this vineyard, with its extreme conditions and the effort to cultivate it, that inspired the creation of a singular wine.

Today, Iker and Alberto Martínez continue with their father's vision and passion, but with a renewed approach. At Altún, tradition remains alive, but innovation and connection with the land have become the foundation of the project. The plot where Altún Everest grows is characterised by an 11% slope and a north-southeast orientation that, combined with a unique terroir, allows the grapes to reach their full potential. The harvest is conducted manually, with meticulous selection of the finest grapes, which are collected in 11-kilogram boxes. Once in the winery, vinification begins with a gravity-fed process, allowing for greater precision and respect for the grape. Indigenous yeasts are employed, and the malolactic fermentation is spontaneous, taking place in 500-litre French oak barrels. Finally, over 14 months, the wine ages in new oak barrels, endowing it with an elegant structure and a complexity that only time can bestow.

Altún Everest is a reflection of that passion for viticulture, respect for the land, and perseverance to reach the highest goals. A wine that, like Everest, represents a challenge overcome and a new summit to continue conquering.

 

2022

Altún Everest 2022 boasts an alluring deep garnet hue. On the nose, there are intense aromas of ripe fruits such as plums and cherries, accompanied by spices and toffees, with a balsamic undertone that adds complexity. On the palate, it is a powerful wine, with an elegant and expressive body, offering a long and persistent finish. Its concentrated profile highlights the richness of the terroir, providing a pleasurable and memorable experience.
