About Sassotondo Monte Calvo Ciliegiolo

When Edoardo Ventimiglia, a film cameraman, and his wife, Carla Benini, a business consultant, arrived in Sovana, in the Tuscan Maremma (Italy) in 1990, they were among the first to sense the enormous potential of the area, between cliffs and volcanic soils, that had not been very well known until then. They fell in love with the place so much that they decided to leave their respective professions in Rome to give the area the exposure it deserves. With 12 hectares, 9 with red grapes (Ciliegiolo, Sangiovese, Teroldego and Merlot) and 3 with white grapes (Trebbiano, Greco, Sauvignon), the winery is located in the foothills of the Bolsena volcanic basin and, under the name Sassotondo, offers authentic, genuine and markedly territorial wines.

With vineyards at the foot of Monte Calvo, in the Volsini Volcanic District, Edoardo and Carla focus on researching volcanic terroir. The extreme variability of the soils here has led to the marking of seven micro terroirs that lead to seven different Ciliegiolo wines and demonstrate the importance of minerality and its influence on each of the wines. One of them, Sassotondo Monte Calvo Ciliegiolo, is a single-variety Ciliegiolo that is organically cultivated, harvested and selected by hand. When the grapes reach the winery, vinification is carried out in stainless steel with native yeasts. The wine then ages in foudres for 12 months and finally remains in the bottle for 6 months before being released for sale.

Sassotondo Monte Calvo Ciliegiolo is an agile and dynamic wine, but elegant and flavoursome at the same time. A wine that enhances the value of Ciliegiolo, a variety unjustly considered minor, and that thanks to the work of Edoardo and Carla is beginning to get the reputation it deserves in the DOC Maremma Toscana.

 

2018

Sassotondo Monte Calvo Ciliegiolo 2018 is a smooth red wine with aromas of red fruit, notes of aromatic herbs and hints of turmeric. On the palate it is smooth, pleasant and very mineral. A medium-bodied wine with perfectly balanced oak and a long finish with hints of white pepper.
