About Petit Caus Blanc

Still wines with direct aromas. There is nowhere that makes them better than the D.O. Penedés. In the north of Spain, between Barcelona and Tarragona, this denomination’s vines ripen between the sea and the mountains, influenced by a large number of microclimates that contribute to the true richness of the area. Among these tremendously aromatic wines is Petit Caus Blanc.

Petit Caus Blanc is a young white wine produced by Can Ràfols dels Caus. This estate is a thousand years old, with records dating back as far as the year 992, and is located right in the Garraf Massif (in the Catalan coastal mountain range). This is where, at an altitude of 300 metres above sea level on sloping terraces, we find 700 hectares of vineyards growing around 28 grape varieties (both international and native), where the undisputed queen is the Xarel·lo. In this area, formed about 20 million years ago on the seabed, the soil is made up of calcium carbonate and magnesium and is very rich in microelements and minerals. The unique climate (with scarce rainfall and temperatures regulated by the nearby sea), together with the completely manual work (without chemical products), result in high quality grapes and balanced organic wines.

Part of the secret of Petit Caus Blanc also lies in the harvest and vinification, which are completely manual, allowing spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts and microvinifications of the different plots. This work, which involves a great exercise of traceability and identification of each plot and batch of grapes, would not be possible without the construction of a new winery championed by Carlos Esteva (the winery’s current generation), equipped with the latest technology and designed at different levels to allow gravity to do the work. The Petit Caus Blanc grapes are macerated at cold temperatures and gently pressed. The must ferments in stainless steel tanks for 3 weeks. Finally, the wine is left to settle and bottled without filtering.

2011 Very fresh and pleasant young white wine from Penedès with a good, light and tasty mid palate in which the aromas felt in the nose are noticed again along with an excellent acidity.  A pleasant, light and easy-drinking wine.

Pale, bright straw yellow colour with greenish and waxen reflections. Very clean and transparent.

Good aromatic intensity. A wide range of fresh fruit and citrus are noticed along with subtle floral notes and some intense grassy aromas.
2010 Very fresh and pleasant. The fruit gives way to the herbal and floral aromas which take center stage as the wine opens up. Excellent acidity and a right finish with saline touches. A pleasant, light and easy-drinking wine to be enjoyed cool at any time.

Straw yellow colour with steely shades that result in green edges. Clean and bright wine.

Medium aromatic intensity. The notes of white fruit appear on first nosing along with its hints of green fruit and floral aromas. Once opened, it gains in intensity. The floral aromas gains in expressivity and intense and strong herbal notes are also felt.
