Tasting notes Mater-Dôme Tinto 2009
Red wine. 2 años en barrica and 16 años en depósitos de cemento.
Mater-Dôme Tinto 2009 is a wine that invites one to explore its myriad layers of flavour and aroma. At first glance, it gleams in the glass with an elegant garnet hue interwoven with cherry highlights. On the nose, it unveils an intense and sophisticated blend of aromas reminiscent of the damp forest floor and wild berries such as blueberries and blackberries. Upon tasting, it offers an experience of smoothness and harmony, with refined tannins and a long aromatic journey that lingers with each sip. This wine is recommended for those seeking a mature and complex expression, capable of transporting one to a stroll through a forest during the peak of fruit harvest.

About Mater-Dôme Tinto
The DOC Douro is vast. So expansive, so diverse, and so steeped in history that at times its own greatness causes some territories to be overshadowed. Yet, as with great empires, the larger it is, the more inexhaustible its wealth. Among its quieter folds emerges a name that is increasingly gaining prominence: Mêda.
Nestled in the northeast of Portugal, this discreet and elevated municipality harbours a viticultural identity that many deem unique. Administratively, its vineyards are part of the DOC Douro — one of the oldest and most prestigious denominations in the world — but geographically and sensorially, Mêda plays in a different league.
Here, the vineyards ascend to altitudes of up to 700 metres, on soils that combine schist and granite, something quite unusual in the more classic Douro. The climate also defies norms: it rains more, the summers are less extreme, and the winters are colder. All this results in wines with greater freshness, structure, and ageing potential.
It is not surprising, therefore, that many argue Mêda should have its own denomination. Yet beyond the controversy, there are those who have recognised — and harnessed — its potential from within.
One of the prominent figures associated with this vision is Mateus Nicolau de Almeida, a Portuguese oenologist and producer belonging to one of the Douro's most traditional winemaking families.
Acknowledged in 2014 as “Young Winemaker of the Year” in Portugal, Mateus represents a new generation that combines family legacy with a personal, precise, and deeply respectful approach to the terroir. His work is grounded in his own vineyards, organic practices, and a modern interpretation of the Douro, without forsaking patience or time.
A clear example of this philosophy is Mater-Dôme Tinto. Crafted from touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz, and tinta barroca, it results from meticulous work: destemming and direct crushing in the press, fermentation in vats with a post-maceration period of 20 days, and ageing in French oak barrels, followed by 16 years of maturation in vats.
Here, time is not a resource but a conviction. The natural freshness of the terroir allows for the luxury of time, favouring prolonged ageing, leading to a slow and expressive evolution. The result is a wine that develops fresh tertiary aromas, with a subtle balance between oxidation and reduction, true to its original essence.
Perhaps Mêda does not have its own denomination, but in a DOC as immense as the Douro, wines like Mater-Dôme serve as a reminder that greatness lies not only in size but in the infinite richness hidden within its most well-kept corners.
