About Frontio Arbusto

What is a former Danish broker doing in a small Castilian village of barely 1,000 inhabitants? It sounds like the beginning of a novel, yet it is a true and inspiring story. Thyge Benned, known locally as Chus (because, let's be honest, his Danish name is quite a challenge for any Castilian speaker), decided to radically change his life. He left behind the world of finance, offices, and the hustle and bustle, to pursue his dream: making wine.

In his quest for unique vineyards, more affordable than those in the renowned Rioja or Galicia, and with varieties different from Tempranillo, he arrived at a special corner: the Denominación de Origen (D.O.) Arribes. This place, devoid of large wineries or fame, holds a treasure for those who know where to look: old vineyards, lands steeped in history, and a potential waiting to be discovered.

Thus, Chus landed in Fermoselle, known as the "village of a thousand wineries" due to its ancient underground caves dedicated to winemaking. Today, these wineries bear witness to bygone times, as 90% of the vineyards have vanished. But Chus, far from being discouraged, saw in those old, abandoned, and challenging vineyards, a magical opportunity. While others saw complications, he saw beauty, authenticity, and a future brimming with possibilities.

His eyes literally sparkled at the thought of the wine that could emerge from these forgotten lands. With a blend of passion, madness, and the desire to create something unique, he began to breathe life into his dream under the name Bodegas Frontio.
Among the treasures he discovered in his winemaking adventure is a unique gem: the local variety Juan García. An exclusive grape of the region with a very thin skin and low alcohol content, which he revives organically alongside other varieties such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, Rufete, or Bruñal. Vines over 100 years old planted in complex soils with slate, granite sands, and quartz that imbue his wines with an irresistible blend of minerality, salinity, and acidity. Among his standout creations, Frontio Arbusto is a blend of Tempranillo and Juan García, vinified with whole grapes and 60% unstemmed. Each variety macerates separately for three weeks and ferments with indigenous yeasts. After malolactic fermentation, the blend is assembled and aged in oak barrels of 3-8 years for 10 months. 

Eight years after his arrival in Fermoselle, the answer to what this Dane is doing in a village of 1,000 inhabitants is more than clear: turning the improbable into the unforgettable, transforming forgotten vineyards into unique wines. And although his Danish name remains a challenge for the locals, the names of his wines have already earned a place in the collective memory. Frontio Arbusto stands as testament to this.
