About Comando G Villanueva

“Comando G” was a cartoon series that was a hit in the 1980s, but it is also the rallying cry of two non-conformist winegrowers (Daniel Landi and Fernando García) who have rediscovered Grenache planted in granite soil in the Gredos area, in the provinces of Madrid and Ávila. Named after the three G’s for Granito, Garnacha and Gredos, these passionate winemakers produce out of the ordinary wines, moving away from the influence of wood and forcefulness to explore the freshness, minerality and elegance that is characteristic of the region. Qualities that they have been able to bring to the fore and that today have created a new style of wines with their own character that triumphs wherever it goes. So much work has been devoted to the vineyards recovered in the Sierra de Gredos, that today they present us with a collection of wines classified as regional wine, village wine or single-plot wine.

One of their latest village wines is Comando G Villanueva, a single-variety wine made in the municipality of the same name, whose 60-year-old vines are planted in granitic soil. These are old Grenache vines that are respectfully cultivated and have limited yields. After being harvested by hand, they are vinified with minimal intervention and native yeasts. Fermentation is carried out with whole bunches of grapes separately by plot in open oak vats, with gentle maceration for 45 days and without the use of pumping over or aggressive extractions. The wine is then aged for 10 months in 20 hl foudres and demijohns. It is bottled without filtering or clarifying.

The result is Comando G Villanueva, a village wine from the D.O. Cebreros that faithfully conveys the landscape of the municipality of Villanueva. An oenological experience that celebrates the richness of the land and the expertise of this group who work to recover small treasures at risk of extinction.
