About Château Cos d'Estournel G d'Estournel

"Maharaja," a title historically bestowed upon Hindu monarchs in South Asia, is widely associated with sumptuousness and magnificence. Their palaces, a testament to the architectural grandeur of their era, not only represent a precious cultural heritage but also exerted influence on numerous European aristocrats and merchants in the 19th century. Legend has it that Louis Gaspard d'Estournel, then owner of Château Cos d'Estournel, fell in love with an Indian princess during one of his many overseas voyages. Enamored, he commissioned the construction of a building with exotic influences in 1811, earning him the moniker of the "Maharaja of Saint-Estèphe." A regal winery that, beyond its exotic construction, boasts a terroir of remarkable complexity and opulence. Considering that Cos means "hill of pebbles" in ancient Gascon, their wines are sourced precisely from the vineyards located on this terrain within AOC Saint-Estèphe, in Bordeaux. Currently, the winery is owned by the French billionaire investor Michel Reybier and, being a top-tier estate, it produces some of the most distinguished wines in the world.

From the 100 hectares of vineyards it owns, Château Cos d'Estournel G d'Estournel is a red wine crafted from the varietals merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and petit verdot. Vines with an average age of 55 years are planted in gravelly soil of varied sizes atop a limestone subsoil and are cultivated with respect. In the winery, the selected, destemmed, and crushed grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats. Subsequently, the wine matures in American oak barrels, 50% of which are new.

With Château Cos d'Estournel being one of the most prestigious wineries in the world, the legend of the "Maharaja of Saint-Estèphe" endures through G d'Estournel. A red wine of profound complexity and finesse, the result of the synergy between an exceptional Saint-Estèphe terroir and a meticulous vinification process.
