About Abadía da Cova Loia

Xuno, Juno in English, is a deity of Roman mythology. Wife of Jupiter and queen of the gods, she is known as the goddess of marriage and family. She has also been associated with the fertility of the earth, and in ancient Rome, rituals and offerings were made to ask for her blessing and protection in the production of grapes and wine. In honour of this divinity, José Moure, founder of Adegas Moure in the Ribeira Sacra, produces a wine from chiseled terraces that have been cultivated since Roman times.

Abadía da Cova Loia is a single-varietal wine of mencía, merenzeo, caiño and brancellao from old vines planted on schist and granite soil at an altitude of between 310 and 480 metres above sea level. The vines are between 30 and 80 years old and are worked organically. Due to their location on steep and difficult-to-cultivate terrain, the viticulture that is carried out is an heroic effort. The grapes are manually harvested and placed in 18 kg boxes. In the cellar, the grapes are selected, destemmed and crushed to initiate fermentation in French oak tapered tanks of 4,000 to 7,000 litres. The wine is then aged for 6 months on its lees in 400L French, American and Central European oak barrels before bottling without fining.

Abadía da Cova Loia is a tribute to nature. A unique environment that has prevailed since Roman times, that can only be cultivated with heroic effort, and that, as a result, produces true wonders full of freshness and minerality.
