About Kumeu River Rays Road Pinot Noir
Kumeu River Rays Road Pinot Noir is a red wine made by the Kumeu River winery in Hawke’s Bay, North Island, New Zealand. The new generation of this winery, founded in Auckland (further north on the island) in 1937, started work there in an effort to expand and grow this business, which is world-renowned for its Burgundian-style wines. The fame is not without reason; in fact, some of their wines have even beaten bottles from some French producers in blind tastings.
This quality is due in part to the location of very particular and special vineyards, like Rays Road (in Raukawa). This area, which was previously owned by Trinity Hill and Pascal Jolivet, is the latest addition to this winery’s property. The vines were planted in 2008 and today, 14 years later, they continue to give excellent results, of a “truly brilliant” quality. This is partly due to the build up of heat in the area (very similar to Burgundy and Bordeaux) and the maritime influences that soften the highest temperatures.
Following a manual harvest, the Kumeu River Rays Road Pinot Noir grape clusters are taken to the winery whole and are destemmed and crushed. From there, the grapes are transferred to stainless steel tanks where they ferment with native yeasts for 2-3 weeks. During this time, pumping over is carried out three times a day to extract colour. Finally, Kumeu River Rays Road Pinot Noir spends 11 months of aging where it will also undergo malolactic fermentation.
2019 | Kumeu River Rays Road Pinot Noir 2019 is a smooth red. The nose is fragrant with ripe cherry and red fruit aromas. The palate is concentrated and complex, flavoursome, with soft tannins. |
