About Verónica Ortega Roto
From Jerez de la Frontera to Bierzo, via France and Barcelona. Such has been the journey of the Andalusian Verónica Ortega, the oenologist who can boast of being the first woman to work at La Romanée-Conti. Quite an achievement!
A graduate in Oenology from the University of Cádiz, Verónica has not returned to her homeland for years (and likely won't for many more!), considering that this native of Cádiz has become a pivotal figure in the D.O. Bierzo, in Castilla y León. She has several vintages to her credit—some solo and others collaborative. Now, a new addition joins this family: Verónica Ortega Roto.
The palomino grape will be the essence of this white wine, originating from the municipality of Cobrana, in the Upper Bierzo. This variety, also very typical in southern Andalusia, has thrived splendidly in the slate and red clay soils that abound in this area. In total, 17% of the grapes cultivated in this region belong to this variety, which is named after Fernán Yáñez Palomino, a knight of King Alfonso X the Wise (as explained by Jancis Robinson, Julia Harding, and José Vouillamoz in their book Wine Grapes. A complete guide to 1,368 vine varieties, including their origins and flavours). Specifically, the grapes for Verónica Ortega Roto are grown at an altitude of 750 metres under a very special microclimate, predominantly continental, with oceanic influences and significant thermal contrasts. Thanks to this, the palomino achieves one of its freshest and most invigorating versions on this occasion.
With this project, Verónica also inaugurates a new winery, located in the village of Carracedelo. The building was previously used as a storage facility for materials used in village fairs. However, Verónica (with the corresponding renovations) has transformed it into a new workspace that will allow her to grow and develop. Here, Verónica Ortega Roto ferments in wooden barrels, then moves to sherry casks imported from Jerez itself, which were previously used for ageing manzanilla. There, it will spend over a year under flor yeast until it is bottled. There will be very few units of this marvel (only 1,800 bottles), making the production highly limited and exclusive.
So don't hesitate and add a bottle of Verónica Ortega Roto to your shopping basket. We promise you won't regret it.
