About Tornatore Etna Rosso Pietrarizzo

The Etna volcano in Sicily is the highest and most active in Europe. Known as Italy's “good giant” because although it sometimes disrupts the everyday life of those who live nearby, it does not usually cause great havoc, in reality it brings many benefits to the region. As far as the world of winemaking is concerned, Etna provides volcanic soils that give the wine an unrivalled minerality. Francesco Tornatore, an adventurer who, after making his fortune in telecommunications, decided to recover the vineyards planted by his great-grandfather in 1865 in the village of Castiglione di Sicilia, on the north side of the Etna volcano (Sicily), and to build a beautiful wine estate, has been able to make use of this terroir’s unique features better than anyone.

One of his great wines is Tornatore Etna Rosso Pietrarizzo, a red that comes from a cru, the “Pietrarizzo”, that since the last century has been known as one of the best areas for producing high quality Nerello Mascalese grapes. This volcanic terroir lies at an altitude of 650 metres, at which production is considerably limited. After the grapes are harvested by hand, they are quickly transported to the winery and subjected to an extensive selection process. They are then destemmed, gently crushed and fermented at a controlled temperature. Finally, the wine ages on fine lees in oak barrels and concrete vats for 12 months and completes the aging period with at least 3 months in the bottle.

The result is a perfect combination of the aromatic fullness of the grape with the complexity of aging in oak barrels. Without a doubt, the Tornatore Etna Rosso Pietrarizzo red wine represents all that is good about the Etna volcano.
