About Olga Verde Fontecalada

The enchantment of wine is not found in titles or years of experience, although Olga Verde possesses them in abundance. It is felt in the soil, the vine, the light that caresses the vineyard, and the patience of the one who tends to it. It can be perceived in the Bierzo, among its terrains, its varieties, and its ancient vineyards, and Olga knows how to listen, respect, and convey it into her wines.

An agricultural engineer from the University of Lugo and a master's degree holder in Oenology from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Olga has experienced viticulture firsthand: from the Lavinia shop to wineries such as Las Moradas de San Martín and Edetaria, including projects in Chile and New Zealand. She has led the technical department at Godelia in the D.O. Bierzo, at Bodegas Rectoral do Umia in Rías Baixas, and has coordinated Bierzo Enoturismo. Today, she heads Lagar de Fornelos, the winery of Grupo La Rioja Alta in Rías Baixas, while simultaneously developing her personal project in Bierzo and Galicia alongside Francisco Bendaña. Yet, although her résumé is impressive, neither those titles nor that extensive experience are what truly make her wines special; it is the magic she so adeptly captures.

This philosophy is embodied in Olga Verde Fontecalada, a wine born from a century-old plot of merely 0.10 hectares in Corullón, at an altitude of 540 metres and north-facing. The calcareous clay soils with slate and quartz impart minerality and character, while the artisanal vinification in an open vat with 100% whole clusters and the 11-month ageing in French oak barrels and demijohns allow the wine to express its full essence. 

Fontecalada is intense, balanced, and elegant. A mencia that invites one to experience the magic of Bierzo in the hands of a wine enthusiast who combines knowledge, sensitivity, and passion.
