About Dominio del Challao Garnacha

Some passions arrive unexpectedly. For Manu Michelini, a young Argentine oenologist, the love for La Rioja began almost by accident during a journey to France. What seemed like a mere detour ended up becoming an absolute infatuation with the landscapes of Labastida, its vineyards, and its winemaking history. Today, that affection breathes life into Dominio del Challao, a project Manu shares with Carlos Fernández, aiming to reinterpret the great wines of Rioja from the 70s and 80s with a contemporary and respectful approach to the terroir.

Manu is no novice. He belongs to the renowned Michelini family, which has left its mark in Argentina, Uruguay, and Spain through the winery Michelini i Mufatto, founded alongside his parents, Andrea Mufatto and Gerardo Michelini. His philosophy is clear: each wine must express the essence of the place where it is born. From the Uco Valley to Bierzo, passing through Rioja and Maldonado, the Michelinis have traversed the world seeking exceptional vineyards, and Manu continues that tradition with energy and curiosity.

The encounter with Carlos Fernández, a viticulturist with generations rooted in Labastida, was the natural step for Manu to materialise his vision in this privileged region. Together, they embarked on the adventure of working with organic and biodynamic plots, guided by the idea that wines should not only be elegant and complex but also true to the land that produces them.

Among their treasures stands out Dominio del Challao Garnacha. This wine hails from vineyards situated in the central-northern area of Labastida, at an altitude of 600 metres, with bush-trained vines and soils of silt and sand with a calcareous base. The hand harvest and vinification combine tradition and precision. Seventy percent of the bunches are foot-trodden whole, while the remaining thirty percent are destemmed without crushing. Fermentation occurs in concrete vats for 10 days, followed by 60 days of maceration before pressing in a horizontal pneumatic press, and subsequent malolactic fermentation.

The wine ages for 20 months in a 2000-litre foudre from the Vosges forests in France, then rests for another 6 months in the bottle. Without filtration or fining, each bottle reflects the purity and personality of its vineyard, offering an elegant, complex wine deeply connected to its place of origin. Pure passion!
