About Monestir Tinto

If there is a charming village in the Penedès, it is undoubtedly Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs. Small, serene, and surrounded by an admirable agricultural landscape, this corner harbours the only Romanesque monastery in the region, dating back to the 11th century and declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest. Walking through its peaceful streets is to breathe living history that is palpable in every stone. From this special environment emerges the first collection of prestigious DO Penedès wines by Raventós Codorníu, created after 150 years of producing cavas in the region. An artisanal project that takes the name of Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs to pay homage to the monastery and its vineyards. Monestir Tinto is the most direct expression of that place.

Monestir Tinto is crafted from three selected plots that grow a short distance from the Anoia River. The first estate, with 20-year-old trellised vines, is situated just 200 metres from the riverbank on a calcareous, shallow, and loamy soil. The second, with 25 years and 400 metres from the river, benefits from its higher elevation and gentle slope on red clay soil to promote a later ripening and preserve the natural freshness. The third plot, 21 years old and 300 metres from the water, is located on flat sedimentary terrain with a calcareous nature. The climate is thoroughly Mediterranean. Organic farming is practised on all three estates.

The production of Monestir Tinto is carried out through a meticulous process in the winery to preserve the fruit's character intact. The harvest of the syrah, garnacha, and cabernet sauvignon varieties was done manually, and the alcoholic fermentation and maceration, the period of contact between the must and the skins to extract colour and texture, are gently conducted at a controlled temperature of 23°C in stainless steel tanks. Each plot and each variety are vinified and aged separately until the moment of blending, which is the final mixing of the batches before bottling.

Elegant, taut, and deeply aromatic, Monestir Tinto demonstrates how the essence of a historic village can be bottled with absolute sincerity. A bottle that confirms that at Raventós Codorníu, beyond their cavas, there is talent to bring quiet wines to life, 100% Penedès.
