In Bordeaux, it is unsurprising that many of its renowned châteaux have changed ownership over the centuries. Inheritances, sales, family reorganisations, or the fluctuations of history and the economy have shaped the fate of these legendary estates. Far from resulting in a loss of identity, this succession of proprietors is a natural part of the evolution of the Bordeaux vineyard and, in many cases, has contributed to enhancing the prestige and oenological excellence of its wines.
The history of Les Carmes Haut-Brion dates back to the 16th century, marked by remarkable continuity since its inception. In 1584, Jean de Pontac, lord of Haut-Brion, donated an extensive tract of land with a mill, meadows, and vineyards to the order of the Grands Carmes. This haven of peace and abundance benefited from a pure and constant water source known as d’Eubrion, which nourished and enlivened the estate.
For over two hundred years, the congregation was the sole owner of the site. Over time, with the expansion of its lands within the Haut-Brion vineyard, usage and tradition eventually consolidated the name by which we know it today: Les Carmes Haut-Brion.
Throughout its history, the estate has undergone various transitions but has managed to preserve intact the spirit and magic that define it, a heritage that is clearly reflected in its wines.
Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion is a true expression of the estate's character. Crafted from cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and petit verdot, its alcoholic fermentation is conducted in a controlled manner, with the unique detail that 35% of the grapes ferment with stems, imparting freshness and aromatic complexity. Subsequently, the ageing process extends over 24 months, utilising various vessels to enrich its profile: 30% in new barrels, 60% in foudres, and 10% in amphorae. This approach achieves a balance that provides structure without masking the purity of the fruit. After bottling, the wine rests for 12 months in bottle before being released to the market, refining and gaining harmony.
Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion is a wine that, like the estate from which it originates, combines history, elegance, and an identity deeply rooted in the terroir of Bordeaux.
