About Jose Gil La Canoca

A grandfather is everything, and if not, just ask Jose Gil, one of the rising stars of Rioja viticulture who is revolutionising the region with his restless mind, hardworking spirit, and, above all, the legacy instilled in him since birth. Although he studied oenology in Logroño and worked for extended periods in Burgundy and Germany, everything this son and grandson of viticulturists from the town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra knows is in his blood. His greatest mentor, his grandfather, is the one who truly imparted his love for the vineyard, and with this inherited work philosophy, he embarks on his small project alongside his partner Vicky Fernández, meticulously tending to the vineyard and microvinifying with rigour. Wines that reflect pure terroir and are internationally revolutionising the classic concept of Rioja.

One of his gems, Jose Gil La Canoca, is a red wine made from tempranillo and a small percentage of viura, originating from a small plot called La Canoca. This 0.4-hectare vineyard has silty soil with a small percentage of limestone and is situated at an altitude of 540 metres, with 50-year-old vines cultivated organically and hand-harvested in 200-kilogram crates. In the winery, the grapes are carefully selected, completely destemmed, and gently crushed to start fermentation with native yeasts. Afterwards, the wine ages for 10 months in 500-litre French oak barrels.

Given that it is a very limited production that has caught the attention of renowned wine critics such as Parker and Atkin, Jose Gil La Canoca is a unique opportunity to enjoy a site-specific wine deeply rooted in the landscape. A fresh, lively, and pleasant wine, the fruit of the Gil legacy.

Jose Gil La Canoca 2022 is a red wine that stands out for its expressive and intense character. On the nose, it reveals distinct notes of blackberries and plums, intertwined with subtle herbal hints. On the palate, it offers a pleasant texture and very fine tannins, resulting in a round and enveloping experience. Its fluid and light profile makes it very easy to enjoy, leaving a fresh and fruity impression.
