About Eremitas Amón de Kélia

Eremitas Amón de Kélia is an organic white wine aged in a cement tank and made with the Rabigato variety in the DOC Douro (Portugal) by Mateus Nicolau de Almeida.

Mateus Nicolau de Almeida comes from a winemaking family, and in 2015, he set up his own project in Vila Nova de Foz Côa (Douro). He is fully committed to the terroir, and is always keen to explore the unique characteristics and details of each soil. This work is clear to see in his Eremitas project, three different versions of a wine made with the same variety and vinified in the same way, but with very different characteristics.

Eremitas Amón de Kélia comes from vineyards in the Upper Douro planted in moderately deep quartz soils at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level. They are cultivated using organic farming without any pesticides, herbicides or chemicals that could harm the natural balance of the terroir.

In the winery, the Eremitas Amón de Kélia grapes are macerated in a “calcatórium” (granite basin) for about 3 hours. They are then pressed and the resulting must is racked by gravity in cement tanks where it ferments spontaneously and at a controlled temperature for 12 months.

Mateus is known in his region for showcasing the more personal side of the Duero and Eremitas Amón de Kélia is proof of this. This is an authentic wine made in the image of a soil.

2018 Eremitas Amón de Kélia 2018 is a white wine with aromas of yellow fruits and subtle hints of minerality. On the palate it is voluminous, fruity and pleasant. It has a moderate acidity that does not take away from the sweetness of the fruit, nor the subtle toasted touches.
