Dominio de Calogía 2020 emerges as a full-bodied and characterful red. Upon nosing, it unfurls a spectrum of scents with ripe fruits such as plums and blackberries taking center stage, interwoven with a spiced undertone reminiscent of vanilla and black pepper. On the palate, its velvety texture envelops the taste buds, delivering a sumptuous and rich sensation, with soft tannins that contribute to its robust structure. This wine is a definitive expression of its maturity and vigor.

About Dominio de Calogía

Endings are always the beginning of something new; perhaps even something better than anything that came before. Proof of this lies with José Manuel Pérez Oveja. He is back stronger than ever.

After finishing his first chapter in Viña Pedrosa, the family winery where he spent 30 years, the new chapter of his story is being written in a new phase of life where he works alone (with the encouragement of his wife Silvia Ortega) at Dominio de Calogía, his new winery that is filled with all his personality. His letter of introduction: Dominio de Calogía, a single-variety Tinto Fino (Tempranillo). And what an introduction!

With this personal project, started in the spring of 2020, José Manuel Pérez’ priorities have changed. He now focusses on aspects that before (with large production volumes), were unthinkable, like yields and kilos per vine. Now, José Manuel seeks higher quality rather than quantity in order to be able to work without pressure or inertia.

His dream, which has certainly come true, happens in 20 hectares of his own vineyards, with old vines (between 30 and 70 years old), lying at an altitude of 800 metres above sea level in the heart of the D.O. Ribera del Duero (between the municipalities of Roa and Pedrosa de Duero). Here, the soils are mixed, with different typologies ranging from limestone to stony and clayey soils. Right in the centre of this property, in the style of a French domaine, are the new, avant-garde cellars and facilities, that have seen around 4 million euros worth of investment.

As for the human side of the business, Dominio de Calogía is supported by a young and small team, led on the technical side by Jorge Monge.

The sum of all this, with the fuel of excitement, has quickly positioned Dominio de Calogía as one of the leading reds with more than half of production (25,923 bottles) being sold in foreign markets. A true phoenix of the Ribera del Duero.

2019

Dominio de Calogía 2019 marks the inaugural vintage of this richly concentrated red wine. Exhibiting a deep cherry red hue, nearly opaque in its intensity, this wine offers profound and robust aromatics. Pronounced red fruit characteristics are elegantly intertwined with subtle hints of fine wood. On the palate, it is vigorous and fleshy, displaying a lively backbone. It boasts a well-structured body, with exquisitely refined and meticulously crafted tannins that contribute to its roundness and breadth. Creamy, sophisticated, and delicate, it culminates in a lengthy and lingering finish.
