The Philosopher's Stone, that mythical object of alchemy, has captivated entire generations with its promise of transforming lead into gold and granting immortality. In popular culture, few have captured this idea as powerfully as J.K. Rowling in her iconic book "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", where the stone possesses the power to bestow eternal life and unimaginable wealth. However, alchemy extends beyond magic and fiction. In ancient esoteric texts, there lies an enigmatic message encapsulated in the acronym VITRIOL:
V.I.T. – Visite Interiorem Terrae (Visit the interior of the earth)
R.I. – Rectificando Invienes (By rectifying, you shall find)
O.L. – Occultum Lapidem (The hidden stone)
This mantra invites one to “descend into the bowels of the earth and, by purifying it, discover the hidden stone.” VITRIOL is believed to represent the most transcendental alchemical substance, the key to finding the legendary Philosopher's Stone.
Inspired by this premise, the wines of Domaine de Bila-Haut seem to envelop each harvest in an aura of mystery and magic. A project that could not exist without the vision and talent of Michel Chapoutier, one of the great names in French oenology and a leading figure in biodynamic viticulture. Renowned for his profound respect for the land and traditions, Chapoutier showcases his expertise in the prestigious appellation Côtes du Roussillon-Villages, located in the charming region of Languedoc-Roussillon.
The wine Bila-Haut R.I. embodies in its name the very essence of alchemy (Rectificando Invienes), a nod to patience, transformation, and refinement. Situated in Lesquerde, the vineyard grows on a gentle north-facing slope, over a terroir of granite and gravel, a soil poor yet rich in character and energy.
Cultivated under ecological and biodynamic practices, the syrah is hand-harvested, fermented with a maceration period of 4 to 5 weeks, and aged for 18 months, combining demi-muid barrels and concrete tanks. This meticulous crafting imparts a unique freshness and smoothness, preserving the essence of the terroir.
Thus, when tasting Bila-Haut R.I., we discover a wine that precisely reflects the land from which it originates: intense minerality, deep notes of black fruit and spices, with an elegant structure and silky tannins. A wine that, thanks to Michel Chapoutier, offers a full and authentic sensory experience, worthy of the great terroirs of Roussillon.
