A truly exceptional wine can only be achieved through rigorous toil in the vineyard. You are likely familiar with this assertion (you may have already encountered it elsewhere on our website); yet, what might seem self-evident is often overlooked by some. It's clear that a poor start leads to a poor finish, and mistakes not rectified at the vine's root cannot be mended in the winery. Miracles are simply not feasible. It is to this guild of winemakers, who labor intensively in the fields and prefer to let the wine express itself unaided in the winery, that Rino Sottimano and his wine Azienda Agricola Sottimano Barbaresco Cottà belong.
 
In the northern reaches of Italy, nestled between the towns of Neive and Barbaresco, lies the Cottà vineyard. Its unique climate and soil composition render these 2.8 hectares one of the most distinctive sites in Piedmont. Specifically, this was among the first plots that Rino began cultivating back in the 1960s. Today, with over 50 years of growth, these vines continue to yield exquisite bunches of grapes which are now vinified by Andrea, Elena, and Claudia, the three children of the founder. Despite the longstanding nature of this family enterprise, an unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship has been a hallmark from the outset. Aware of the critical importance of treating the wine with care from the outset, Rino has always practiced sustainable viticulture, eschewing herbicides and chemical products entirely.
 
Following meticulous selection of the Nebbiolo grapes at harvest, Azienda Agricola Sottimano Barbaresco Cottà is crafted without any oenological intervention, allowing the wine and the terroir of the D.O.C.G. Barbaresco to be fully expressed. Consequently, it is not unusual to observe that the alcoholic fermentation of Azienda Agricola Sottimano Barbaresco Cottà occurs spontaneously, utilizing indigenous yeasts. Similarly, all vinifications at Azienda Agricola Sottimano are characterized by extended maceration on the skins. This approach is also employed for Azienda Agricola Sottimano Barbaresco Cottà. Ultimately, Azienda Agricola Sottimano Barbaresco Cottà is racked into barrels to undergo malolactic fermentation and to mature further. An additional year of bottle aging ensures that this red wine attains excellence among the esteemed wines of Northern Italy.
