About Uggiano Roccialta Chianti Classico DOCG

Tradition or evolution? In Tuscany, the question resonates well, almost inevitably… yet perhaps it is misconceived from the outset.

For in places like Uggiano, it is not a matter of choosing one over the other, but of understanding how they coexist. How a landscape steeped in history can continue to evolve without losing its identity, and how modern techniques do not seek to replace anything, but rather to refine what already exists.

Everything begins in the 1970s when the French-trained oenologist Giuseppe Losapio decides to establish the winery in the castle of Montespertoli. A setting hard to surpass: gentle hills, history in every stone, and that Tuscan landscape that seems designed for wine to make sense even before it is crafted.

As the project grows, in 1976 the winery takes a crucial step and relocates to San Vincenzo a Torri, at the very heart of rural Tuscany. Monasteries, churches, scattered villas… an environment that resembles more a postcard than a productive map. Yet it is here that Uggiano begins to define itself as a winery with ambition, but with very clear roots.

Over time, Losapio passes the baton to three names that are now pivotal in the recent history of the project: Giacomo, Fabio, and Daniele. They did not arrive to disrupt, but to organize, consolidate, and continue an idea that was already successful. A calm, almost natural transition, yet decisive.

A fine example of how Uggiano works today is Uggiano Roccialta Chianti Classico DOCG, where the sangiovese plays an almost absolute leading role, accompanied by a small percentage of canaiolo.

The vinification aims to extract with precision, not excess. After crushing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts, at controlled temperatures between 26 and 28 °C. During this phase, two daily pump-overs are conducted, crucial for extracting colour, structure, and tannins from the skins without losing finesse.

After fermentation, Uggiano Roccialta Chianti Classico DOCG undergoes ageing for 6 to 8 months in large oak barrels of 30 to 60 hectolitres, a format designed to provide micro-oxygenation without overly influencing the aromatic profile. Once ageing is complete, the wine is kept in stainless steel until bottling, where it rests for another 6 months before being released to the market, enhancing its balance and rounding its expression.

The result is a Chianti Classico that combines vigour and restraint. A wine with clear red fruit, polished tannins, and a sense of structure that supports rather than weighs down.
