Tasting notes Quinta Milú El Malo 2022

Red wine Aged in wood Organic. 15 meses en barrica.

Quinta Milú El Malo 2022 is a wine that does not go unnoticed. Its deep, dark hue mirrors the concentrated character that defines this wine. On the nose, notes of black fruits such as plum and blackberry emerge, enveloped in a hint of black olives and wild herbs that impart freshness. On the palate, it is bold and full-bodied, perfectly balanced with a spicy nuance from its maturation in wood. This 2022 vintage is particularly intense and compact, reflecting a youthful vigour that promises to mellow and round out over time. Ideal for those seeking a wine with character and persistence.

About Quinta Milú El Malo

There are names that emerge from affection and ultimately encapsulate an entire way of understanding life. Quinta Milú is one such name. It originates from "Mi Lucas," the affectionate way in which Germán R. Blanco addressed his son. From the fusion of that intimate possessive with the first syllable of Lucas came Milú, a familial nickname that eventually became the identity of the project. Quinta, on the other hand, evokes those small family estates where land, time, and tradition intertwine across generations.

Born in Gijón, though raised alongside his great-grandmother in the Bercian village of Albares de la Ribera, Germán discovered from a young age a deep connection with the countryside. This bond with the land would shape his career and lead him, after gaining education and taking his initial steps in the Ribera del Duero, to embark on his most personal venture where he crafts microvinifications that embody a philosophy rooted in minimal intervention, respect for the terroir, and a profoundly personal perspective.

From the DO Ribera del Duero, in the historic village of La Aguilera, Quinta Milú El Malo emerges as a tribute to traditional small-scale viticulture. The grapes come from old vineyards scattered across small family plots situated at an altitude of nearly 900 metres above sea level. The vines thrive on clay-limestone soils mixed with sands, a combination that imparts freshness and tension to the plant. The area's climate is Mediterranean continental, characterised by cold winters, warm summers, and a stark thermal contrast between day and night, allowing the grape to ripen slowly while maintaining its natural acidity. The undisputed star is the tinto fino variety, the region's native grape, cultivated under an ecological philosophy that honours biodiversity and harvested manually in small crates.

In the winery, Quinta Milú El Malo follows an artisanal and minimally interventionist process. Once the grapes are harvested, traditional foot treading is conducted in open French oak vats. Alcoholic fermentation occurs spontaneously thanks to the native yeasts present in the vineyard itself. Subsequently, malolactic fermentation is carried out, softening the acidity and providing a rounder texture on the palate. Finally, the wine undergoes ageing in used French oak barrels for 15 months and is then bottled without fining or filtering.

Direct, expressive, and of captivating authenticity, Quinta Milú El Malo represents the most intense interpretation of Germán R. Blanco's project. It is no wonder that the British critic and Master of Wine Tim Atkin describes it as the "densest and most compact of the Quinta Milú reds." A wine of great depth that, without forsaking freshness and vineyard identity, encapsulates the entire personality of a project born from profound respect for the land.
