About Mikra Thira Santorini
Therasia, also known as Thirasia, is a diminutive isle nestled within the Santorini archipelago in Greece. Though it may not be as renowned as its larger counterpart, Santorini, Therasia boasts its own unique allure and charm, and of course, it is also engaged in viticulture, particularly with wines crafted from the assyrtiko grape variety. The island's exceptional volcanic soil, abundant sunshine, and maritime breezes have caught the attention of boutique vintners who recognize the island's latent potential. Pioneering this vinicultural endeavor were Angelis Gerovassiliou, Vassilis Tsaktsarlis, and Ioanna Vamvakouri, three eminent oenologists who were instrumental in establishing the first winery on the island. Under the name of Mikra Thira (Little Santorini), they unveil high-caliber wines that encapsulate the distinctive character of Therasia.
They introduce us to Mikra Thira Santorini, a single-varietal wine made from the indigenous assyrtiko grape, cultivated near the sea on mineral-rich, acidic soils with excellent water retention properties. The viticulture is conducted with an ethos of respect for the environment, and the harvest is carried out manually at the peak of ripeness. Subsequently, in the winery, the grapes are meticulously selected, destemmed, and pressed to commence fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then left to mature on its lees for 4 months prior to bottling.
While all white wines under the Protected Designation of Origin Santorini are influenced by the maritime climate, Mikra Thira Santorini is distinguished by its exceptional individuality. This wine is noted for its depth, intensity, and captivating mineral profile, offering a unique and memorable tasting experience.
