About Mengoba El Colao
What is a Bordeaux-trained oenologist, with experience at internationally renowned châteaux such as Grand-Puy-Lacoste or Cos d’Estournel, doing making wine in a small corner of Bierzo? The answer lies in the uncompromising quest for authenticity. Gregory Pérez decided to trade the comfort and prestige of the French wine aristocracy for the freedom to interpret the Leonese slopes. During his exploration of the area, he realised that there was no need to imitate anyone to create great wines. Upon discovering an exceptional plot of old vineyards in Valtuille de Arriba, it became clear to him that the combination of altitude, ancient vines, and unique soils had the potential to deliver elegance and fluidity on par with the world's finest terroirs, provided that the inherent qualities of the land were fully respected.
From Valtuille de Arriba, in the Bierzo region within the province of León, El Colao originates from a single meticulously selected plot of old vines, chosen for its high altitude and excellent sun exposure. The soils are composed of deep clays, a type of terrain with high water retention capacity that acts as a natural reservoir, nourishing the plant during dry periods and imparting a fleshy texture to the fruit. The climate is a transitional Mediterranean-continental with Atlantic influence, characterised by mild summers and cool nights that preserve impeccable acidity. Made from low-yielding old vines of alicante bouschet, the vineyard is managed with artisanal viticulture that respects the environment, with the harvest carried out strictly by hand.
The winemaking process in the winery follows a minimalist approach designed to ensure nothing masks the expression of the plot. The hand-harvested grapes undergo spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with the naturally occurring yeasts present on the grape skins. This fermentation takes place in 400-litre clay jars, porous vessels that allow constant micro-oxygenation without imparting the aromas or tannins of wood. Once fermentation is complete, the wine undergoes a 10-month ageing period in the same clay jars on its fine lees, gaining creaminess, structure, and volume on the palate before bottling.
The result is a red wine of noble, fluid, and profoundly sincere character. A different proposition that breaks the usual moulds and demonstrates how clay can bottle the essence of a unique territory.
