About Mengoba Blanco

Mengonba Blanco is a white wine from the D.O Bierzo produced by Bodega y Viñedos Mengoba, a winery founded back in 2007 by winemaker Gregory Pérez and is home to 13 hectares of old vineyards.

The winery is located in San Juan de Carracedo, close to the Carracedo Monastry, one of the most important in the Bierzo and the Camino de Santiago (Way of St James). The region is home to smooth and moderate climate with high humidity. The average annual temperature is 12.3ºC, reaching lows of 3.6ºC in winter and highs of 23.6ºC in the hottest months of summer.
 

This wine is a blend of two different grape varieties: Doña Blanca and Godello, which come from old vines aged between 25 and 80 years old. The vineyards are home to slate, calcareous and stony soils and are cultivated using artisan methods, using outside products only if there is a risk of illness.
 

At the winery, the different grape varieties undergo fermentation separately, with the Godello grapes fermenting in wooden fudres, while the Doña Blanca grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks, at low temperatures. Following this, the wine is aged on its lees for between 6 and 8 months, with weekly battonages. Mengonba Blanco is then finally bottled following a light clarification and filtration.

2019

Mengoba Blanco 2019 is a sophisticated white wine. The bouquet reveals a complex array of aromatic herbs, tropical fruits, and citrus notes. On the palate, it is expansive and silky, with a remarkably unctuous texture. The finish is prolonged and lingering. 
2013 Upon tasting, it reveals a vibrant, silky, and mineral character. It is harmonious, well-structured, and rounded, displaying a commendable acidity. The finish is extensive and lingering. Toasted nuances emanate from its maturation process. The wine exhibits a pale golden yellow hue with a steely edge. It is clear and luminous. On the nose, it is pristine, of moderate intensity, exuding freshness and a mineral quality. Aromas of ripe white fruits intermingle with floral and herbal notes. Undertones of pastry complement the profoundly mineral base.
2012 It has a good, still fresh and mineral attack and an unctuous, balanced mid palate. In the palate, this wine is round and shows a good acidity and a long finish with a marked persistence in which, finally, some nice toasted notes are noticed.  A great white wine from Bierzo.

Clean, very fresh and mineral, medium-intensity aromas. Its ripe white fruit aromas, its light floral and grassy notes, its light hints of tropical fruits and citrus and some nuances of bakery are very well combined with a highly mineral background.
