About El Garnacho Viejo de la Familia Acha

In some regions, certain grape varieties were historically used primarily for blends or lower quality wines. This may affect how people see its value compared to other more prestigious and traditionally recognised varieties. One of these varieties is the Grenache, a winemaking grape that tends to have a high yield and, because of its mass production, has historically been misunderstood or underestimated. The Vintae Group, a wine company with a presence in the most prestigious Spanish denominations with innovative and creative wines, champions the Grenache with their Proyecto Garnachas. An initiative led by winemaker Raúl Acha who, following the course of the Ebro River, has been in charge of recovering old vineyards of this variety in forgotten places. An exciting wine adventure through the most hidden corners of La Rioja, Navarra, Aragón and Catalonia.

His El Garnacho Viejo de la Familia Acha is a wine made from old vineyards planted in 1906, grown on clay-ferrous soils at an altitude of 600 metres in La Rioja. The vines are cultivated using traditional methods and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness. In the winery, the grapes are selected, destemmed and gently crushed to begin fermentation with native yeasts at a controlled temperature. The wine is then aged for about 30 months in new, 225-litre French oak barrels before being bottled.

With the aim of paying tribute to one of the most important grapes of the Mediterranean, wines like El Garnacho Viejo de la Familia Acha are presented to us as the fruit of a landscape and a tradition. Centuries-old vines from the winemaker’s own ancestors and that vindicates the essence of a unique variety.
